The "just label it movement" in Hawaii has been led by the magnificent seven of which names are Walter Ritte, Dr. Melissa Yee, Dr. Hector Valenzuela, Hesh Goldstein, Mary Oyama, Jeri Di Pietro, and Courtney Bruch.
These justice seekers have utilized their expertise and research to opine as individuals that genetically modified
foodstuffs may have an adverse impact on the ecosystem and that public awareness of the introduction of genetically modified organisms into the environment is worthy of monitoring and findings from such research of benefit to
consumers.
Genetically modified organisms, known as GMO's, are an
artificial creation rendered by science in the guise of chemical companies to attempt to enhance the yield of foodstuffs and other commodities for financial gain, regardless of the negative impact they may have on the health of consumers and ramifications that involve environmental degradation, and irrevocable harm
to the food chain.
In Honolulu Council District One, over five town hall
meetings were conducted specifically on the subject of GMO's whereby the magnificent seven have participated as special guest speakers and made presentations to educate the public on the role of GMO's in our society. Through
their efforts, Council District One's four neighborhood boards responded with motions that resulted with all four boards taking a position in favor of labeling products that contain GMO's and support the public to have the right to
know.
Therefore, the City and County of Honolulu's City Council hereby recognizes the achievements and dedication of Walter Ritte, Dr. Melissa Yee, Dr. Hector Valenzuela, Hesh Goldstein, Mary Oyama, Jeri Di Pietro, and Courtney
Bruch in their efforts to advance and champion the public's desire to know if GMO's are in the products they consume and wishes them success in all their future endeavors.
